Israeli busted by police. Turns informant and gets everyone else arrested

The mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus, a state assemblyman and dozens of others were rounded up early Thursday as the F.B.I. swept across four counties in New Jersey as part of a two-year corruption and money-laundering investigation, the authorities said.

The case ranged from the Jersey Shore to Brooklyn and has even reached into the State House in Trenton. It began with bank fraud charges against a member of the insular Syrian Jewish enclave centered on the seaside town of Deal, N.J. But when that man became a federal informant and posed as a crooked real estate developer offering cash bribes to obtain government approvals, the case mushroomed into a political scandal that could rival the most explosive and sleazy in New Jersey’s recent past.

Among the roughly 30 people arrested by midmorning were Mayor Peter J. Cammarano III of Hoboken and Mayor Dennis Elwell of Secaucus, both Democrats, and Assemblyman Daniel M. Van Pelt, a Republican from Forked River, in Ocean County. Mr. Cammarano, who turned 32 on Wednesday, was elected mayor June 9 and sworn in July 1, after serving as councilman at large since 2005.

Also taken to the Newark office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation were the president of the City Council in Jersey City, Mariano Vega, and the city’s deputy mayor, Leona Beldini.

Agents also raided the home of Joseph V. Doria Jr., commissioner of the state’s Department of Community Affairs, who also is the former mayor of Bayonne, an official confirmed Thursday morning.

The United States attorney’s office in Newark scheduled a news conference for noon.

Also among those arrested were several rabbis from enclaves of Syrian Jews in Brooklyn and in Deal and Elberon, communities along the Jersey Shore in Monmouth County.

The timing of the investigation dovetails with the timing of bank fraud charges against Solomon Dwek, son of the founders of the Deal Yeshiva, a religious school that teaches children in the Sephardic Jewish tradition. Mr. Dwek passed a $25 million bad check at a PNC Bank branch in 2006, according to The Asbury Park Press. In the investigation, a cooperating witness posed as a real estate developer looking to build in Hoboken.

Americans always knew the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) was going to be expensive. But the program's special inspector general, Neil Barofsky, thinks the U.S. government has bitten off more than it bargained for: on July 20, his office released a report estimating the $700 billion effort to shore up the nation's wobbly banking system could end up costing taxpayers as much as $23.7 trillion, due to estimates for programs offered by the FDIC, federal money for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and other institutions on top of $7.4 trillion in TARP and other Treasury aid. A spokesperson for the Treasury Department quickly called the numbers flawed, making this the latest in the back and forth between Barofsky's oversight office — which currently has 35 ongoing criminal and civil investigations of suspected accounting, securities and mortgage fraud — and the Treasury Department over the handling of TARP disbursements.

A Beverly Hills hedge fund manager was arrested Friday on a charge he bilked investors out of $44.3 million, including $5 million he lost playing poker, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Bradley L. Ruderman, 46, surrendered to FBI agents after being named in a wire fraud complaint. He was later released on $500,000 bond.

The government alleges he spent at least $8.7 million of investor money on personal expenses including a summer rental of a Malibu beach home and two Porsches. He admitted in an FBI interview that he lost $5.2 million of investor money in poker games held in a Beverly Hills luxury hotel suite, the U.S. attorney's office said in a statement.

A message seeking comment was left at the offices of Ruderman's attorney, James D. Riddet of Santa Ana.

A federal judge last month froze Ruderman's assets after the Securities and Exchange Commission filed a complaint alleging he falsely told investors his hedge funds had hundreds of millions of dollars in assets.

Ruderman's scheme lasted from 2002 until its collapse this year, according to the wire fraud complaint.

He allegedly raised $44.3 million from 22 investors with claims of annual returns as high as 60 percent.

Many of the victims named in the complaint were Ruderman's own relatives, U.S. attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek said.

The complaint said he lied about profits, repeatedly sent false account statements to investors and reported he had $206 million in funds under management after actually losing $3 million in 2008 and beginning 2009 with a net value of only $588,246.

If convicted, Ruderman faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.

Dr Ira Katz, head of mental health services for the Veterans Administration, denied there was a suicide epidemic when he told a congressional committee there had been 790 suicide attempts in all of 2007.

But then an email, written in February 2008 from Katz to a colleague, came to light. "Shh! Our suicide prevention co-ordinators are identifying about 1,000 suicide attempts per month among the veterans we see in our medical facilities. Is this something we should (carefully) address ourselves in some sort of release before someone stumbles on it?" Katz wrote.

Israeli sex pervert guilty of raping and killing 14 year old girl

Private First Class Steven Dale Green, 24, was found guilty in the US District Court in western Kentucky. His trial took place in a civilian court as he was discharged from the army's 101st Airborne Division for a "personality disorder" before his crimes came to light.

Prosecution witnesses said Green had shot the family of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi at her home before raping and killing the girl on March 12, 2006.

Defence lawyer Darren Wolff admitted that his team were expecting Green to be found guilty, but were focusing their efforts on avoiding the death penalty for their client when sentencing begins next week.

"Is this verdict a surprise to us? No", Mr Wolff said after the verdict was announced. "The goal has always been to save our client's life. And, now we're going to go to the most important phase, which is the sentencing phase, and we're going to accomplish that goal."

During the trial, jurors heard that the attack on the al-Janabi family was pre-meditated, and "a crime committed in cold blood".

Prosecutors claimed that Green and fellow servicemen had talked about having sex with Iraqi women while playing cards and drinking whisky in the nights leading up to the killings.

Three other soldiers are serving time in military prisons for their roles in the attack. They all testified against Green during his trial.

Another day, another Israeli involved in financial shenanigans

The chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York resigned yesterday after questions were raised about his role as a director of Goldman Sachs and his purchases of stock in the company, which is regulated by the New York Fed.

Stephen Friedman, a onetime chairman of Goldman and economic adviser to President George W. Bush, said in his resignation letter that his continued presence would be a "distraction" for the central bank.

Goldman came under direct supervision of the New York Fed in September, when it was granted emergency permission to change its charter to become a bank holding company. Rather than step down from either board, Friedman requested a waiver from normal Fed rules to continue serving, actions that were reported Monday by the Wall Street Journal. He bought $3 million worth of Goldman Sachs stock in December, after the firm had come under the umbrella of the New York Fed.

As chairman of the New York Fed, Friedman had no role in the day-to-day supervision of Goldman or the bank's policies in response to the financial crisis. But he did take the lead in selecting Timothy F. Geithner's successor as president of the reserve bank, which is at the front lines of the government's oversight of the financial system. The board named William C. Dudley, who was chief economist at Goldman until 2006, as president of the bank when Geithner was named Treasury secretary. That decision had to be approved by the Fed Board of Governors in Washington.

A few week ago we posted about ten billboards going up around Albuquerque, NM calling for congress to cut off aid to Israel. They were put up by The Coalition to Stop $30 Billion to Israel, a multi-ethnic, multi-religious coalition working to "end to the ten year commitment of $30 billion in U.S. taxpayer-funded military aid pledged to Israel in 2007 by the Bush administration." Today, the coalition sent out a press release saying that although Lamar Outdoor Advertising had signed a contract to run the billboards for eight weeks, they care coming down after three. From the press release:

On April 8th, the Coalition to Stop $30 Billion to Israel erected the billboards throughout the Albuquerque area in order to inform the public about the misuse of their tax dollars, denominated in human lives. The group was motivated by concern for the Palestinian people who had recently been subjected to a massive invasion of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli military. Over 1,400 Palestinians – mostly civilian, including three hundred children – were killed and over 5,000 were injured. In 2007 the Bush administration signed a Memorandum of Understanding that provides $30 billion of U.S. taxpayer dollars to Israel over a ten year period beginning in 2008. The majority of these dollars will be used to purchase American-made weapons.

The design of the billboard had been approved by Lamar and the billboards’ wording and final image were suggested by Lamar’s graphics designer.

According to information from Lamar, it appears groups claiming to be pro-Israel have conducted a campaign to pressure Lamar to remove the billboards. The Coalition believes this is a deliberate attempt to silence its right to free speech because the humanitarian message of the billboards supports equal rights for the Palestinian people, thereby necessitating criticism of Israel.

The U.S. government is abandoning espionage-law charges against two former lobbyists for a pro-Israel advocacy group, federal officials announced this morning.

Prosecutors said they will ask a judge to dismiss the case against Steven J. Rosen and Keith Weissman because a series of court decisions had made it unlikely they would win convictions. The two are former lobbyists for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, an influential advocacy group.

Rosen and Weissman were charged in 2005 with conspiring to obtain classified information and pass it to journalists and the Israeli government. They were the first non-government civilians charged under the 1917 espionage statute with verbally receiving and transmitting national defense information.

Some lawyers and First Amendment advocates have said the case would criminalize the type of information exchange that is common among journalists, lobbyists and think-tank analysts.

Dana J. Boente, the acting U.S. attorney in Alexandria, said this morning that prosecutors were abandoning the case because of "the diminished likelihood the government will prevail at trial under the additional intent requirements imposed by the court and the inevitable disclosure of classified information that would occur at any trial.''

Prosecutors have filed a motion to dismiss the indictment, which must be approved by a federal judge.

Israel decides what Americans watch on TV

A Pakistani man has been jailed by a US court for broadcasting Hezbollah's television channel and selling it to customers in the US.

Javed Iqbal was sentenced to more than five and a half years in prison for broadcasting Al Manar channel, run by Hezbollah, an armed Lebanese group branded a terrorist organisation by the US.

"I did not make a profit of broadcasting Al Manar and it cost me my life," Iqbal's lawyer, Joshua Dratel, read from a prepared statement on behalf of his client.

Iqbal had pleaded guilty to the charges in December.

The US treasury labelled Al Manar a terrorist organisation in March 2006, saying it supported Hezbollah's fund-raising and recruitment activities.

'Hezbollah's man in NY'

Prosecutors said Iqbal, who moved to the US more than 26 years ago, provided transmission services to the Beirut-based channel in return for payment in 2005 and 2006 and sold the channel to US customers through his company, HDTV Ltd.

"He was, in a very real sense, Hezbollah's man in New York city," said Eric Snyder, a prosecutor, during the sentencing hearing, saying the Lebanese group used the channel to recruit new members.

Dratel said Iqbal did not support Hezbollah and sold the channel to make money as part of his satellite television business that also included Christian channels and adult entertainment.

Iqbal had been financially ruined by the charges which "had devastated him and his family", including his pregnant wife and five children, Dratel said.

A second man, Saleh Elahwal, who also worked for the company, has also pleaded guilty to charges.

Congresswoman Jane Harman accused after National Security Agency bugged phone of unidentified Israeli agent

A prominent Democratic Congresswoman was embroiled tonight in a growing scandal involving government wiretaps and her relationship with two alleged Israeli spies.

Jane Harman, a California Democrat with long involvement in US intelligence matters, was allegedly recorded by a Bush administration wiretap promising an Israeli agent that she would intervene on behalf of two pro-Israel lobbyists charged in the US with spying.

In return for pledging to use her influence to get the charges against the two men reduced, Ms Harman, a pro-Israeli hawk, was allegedly told by the unidentified agent that he would put pressure on senior Democrats to get her appointed to a top Congressional intelligence post.

Allegations that Ms Harman had inappropriately used her influence to aid the two employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the powerful Israeli lobby group, surfaced in 2006. What is new is the claim that she had been caught on a National Security Agency (NSA) wiretap discussing a “quid pro quo” deal on the case.

The alleged wiretap, reported by the political journal Congressional Quarterly, occurred because the NSA had been targeting telephone calls made by the Israeli agent during an investigation of AIPAC. In 2006 it was reported that Ms Harman was the subject of an FBI investigation over her involvement with the hawkish Israeli lobby group.

Congressional Quarterly also claimed that in 2006 Alberto Gonzales, President Bush’s Attorney General, got the investigation against Ms Harman dropped because he wanted her help to defend the Administration’s warrantless wiretapping programme, which was about to exposed by The New York Times.

Indeed, Ms Harman managed to persuade the newspaper not to publish the story. It later did print it, and the congresswoman lambasted the editors for doing so, giving the Bush administration some badly needed political cover for the secret eavesdropping programme. The FBI dropped its investigation of her because of “lack of evidence”.

The Israeli lobbyists, Steven J Rosen and Keith Weissman, were charged in 2005 with conspiring to obtain classified US intelligence and passing it to the Israeli government and Israeli journalists. They are due to go on trial this summer and their case has become a cause celebre among Israeli hawks in the US.

In a statement, Ms Harman denied ever contacting the US Justice Department about the AIPAC lobbyists. She added: “The...story simply recycles three-year-old discredited reporting of largely unsourced material. If there is anything about this story that should arouse concern, it is that the Bush Administration may have been engaged in electronic surveillance of members of Congressional Intelligence committees.”

Another Israeli in the Obama administration involved in scandal

A White House spokesman said Friday that President Barack Obama has full confidence in Steven Rattner, leader of the administration's auto task force, who was involved in payments under scrutiny in an alleged kickback scheme at New York state's pension fund.

Mr. Rattner's former private-equity firm, Quadrangle Group, is one of about 20 investment firms allegedly involved in a long-running pay-to-play investigation. The New York state attorney general's office and the Securities and Exchange Commission allege that investment firms made payments in exchange for investments from the $122 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund.

Mr. Rattner wasn't named in the SEC's complaint, but a person familiar with the matter said he was the senior Quadrangle executive the complaint identifies as meeting with a politically connected consultant about a finder's fee, which Quadrangle later paid after receiving an investment from the New York fund.

Neither Mr. Rattner nor Quadrangle has been accused of wrongdoing.

They have been working closely with him and his Treasury colleagues, and wouldn't want to start from scratch with a new government official, given the strict time constraints to turn around the auto maker, they said.

While investment firms are expected to receive greater attention in the months ahead, they have not been the main focus of the case so far. A political adviser and New York's former deputy comptroller, among others, have been charged.

The main legal issue for the investment firms turns on whether they knew, or should have known, that fees they paid to certain entities for access to the New York fund were legitimate or whether they were improper kickbacks, and whether they were properly disclosed, according to people familiar with the matter.

Industry experts, without commenting on the specifics of the case, say it is routine for senior private-equity executives to have high-level meetings with people who control or influence pension-fund purse strings.

"The firms bring them to answer questions about the formation of the firm, about its culture," says Sanjay Mansukhani, head of private-markets manager research at the consulting firm Watson Wyatt. To impress clients, he added, "they like to bring in the big guns."

In addition to Mr. Rattner, another high-profile executive not mentioned by name in the complaint is Stephen Berger, the head of a New York buyout firm who used to run the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, according to people with knowledge of the probe.

Mr. Berger, chairman of Odyssey Investment Partners, is the person that the SEC complaint refers to as an Odyssey "managing director," these people said. Odyssey is a successor firm to Odyssey Partners, a pioneering investment fund. Mr. Berger currently serves as chairman of a New York State commission on health-care facilities.

Neither Odyssey nor Mr. Berger has been charged with wrongdoing. Odyssey did not make Mr. Berger available for comment. An Odyssey spokesman said the firm is cooperating with the investigations and was never a target of the investigation.

The SEC and the New York attorney general declined to comment.

The SEC alleges that in 2004, a person who helped private-equity firms get investments from the New York fund told an Odyssey managing director that investment firms needed to hire a certain "placement" agent firm to get money from the pension fund.

Although Odyssey was already working with another placement agent, the Odyssey executive agreed that it would also pay the agent on any investment Odyssey received from the New York fund, according to the complaint.

An 18-year-old high school student caught with his 48-year-old math teacher in her bedroom was stabbed to death by her boyfriend, who was himself a former student of hers, police said Tuesday.

Chandler police said 20-year-old Sixto Balbuena told them he never meant to kill Samuel Valdivia. He allegedly told police "the blade went in like going into butter" and that he just wanted to show Valdivia how much he hurt him by sleeping with Tamara Hofmann.

Balbuena, a Navy sailor on leave from California, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder after police found him covered in blood and told them about the killing. He remained jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond on Tuesday and did not yet have a lawyer.

Balbuena found his girlfriend naked and Valdivia in his boxer shorts in the woman's bedroom around 2:40 a.m. Friday, according to police reports and court documents.

Balbuena told police that Valdivia apologized to him before Balbuena began kicking, punching and throwing things at him, according to a police probable cause statement.

Police said Balbuena told them he "wanted to teach the victim a lesson," and stabbed him in the lower side with a kitchen knife, according to the court document. Valdivia later died at a hospital.

He also threw Hofmann to the floor jumped on top of her and demanded to know how long she had been cheating on him, according to the document.

Police said Hofmann taught Valdivia math at El Dorado High School in Chandler and was also Balbuena's teacher when he attended Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe.

A call to both schools was not immediately returned Tuesday. Hofmann's phone number is unlisted.

Balbuena is the one who called 911. He told officers he felt remorse for stabbing Valdivia after seeing him lying on the floor struggling to breathe, police said.

Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Favazzo said Hofmann is being investigated for potential misconduct relative to her involvement with Valdivia.

A 2006 Chandler police report obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday shows that police suspected Hofmann of having a sexual relationship with a then-17-year-old Balbuena.

Both Hofmann and Balbuena denied being in a sexual relationship, and police closed the case.

Looting of retirement plan by Israeli

The U.S. Department of Labor has subpoenaed Tribune Co. in an investigation connected to the media company's employee stock-ownership plan, a key but controversial feature of real-estate mogul Sam Zell's 2007 deal to take Tribune private.

Tribune disclosed the investigation in a bankruptcy court filing on Thursday. The company, which publishes the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times newspapers and owns a string of local television stations, sought bankruptcy protection in December under the weight of $13 billion in debt related to Mr. Zell's buyout of Tribune.

Tribune on March 31 turned over materials in response to the subpoena for an "extensive range of documents," the court filing said. The probe concerns Tribune's employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP.

Mr. Zell's buyout deal involved a structure under which the ESOP became the majority owner of the company, a feature that helped Tribune avoid corporate taxes.

"We view this as a routine inquiry and we are responding by producing the requested documents concerning the ESOP," Tribune said in a statement. A spokeswoman for the Labor Department declined to comment.

The court filing said the investigation concerns the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, a federal law that aims to safeguard participants in employee retirement plans by, among other things, requiring disclosure of funding details and risks.

The Tribune ESOP played an unusual role in Mr. Zell's deal for Tribune. The plan borrowed the billions of dollars used to finance the deal and in turn received all of Tribune's common shares. The company has said the value of the ESOP will be determined in bankruptcy court, though stock is typically wiped out in the bankruptcy process.

Tribune's ESOP is the subject of a lawsuit filed by current and former employees.

The lawsuit, filed in September, alleges Tribune and Mr. Zell failed to uphold their fiduciary duty to the ESOP.

The people hired to fix the economy by Obama are some of the crooks that caused the economy

Lawrence Summers, a top economic adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama, was paid about $5.2 million by hedge fund D.E. Shaw in the past year, financial disclosure forms released by the White House showed on Friday.

Summers, a former U.S. Treasury secretary and Harvard University president, also was paid $2.7 million in speaking fees by a range of organizations and companies, including several troubled Wall Street financial firms, they showed.

The disclosure documents on Summers and other White House officials advising Obama on the global financial crisis covered 2008 and the first few months of this year. Summers became an official adviser on January 20 when Obama took office.

Summers, who was a part-time managing director of D.E. Shaw after stepping down as Harvard president, had speaking fees of $67,500 from JP Morgan, $45,000 from Citigroup, $135,000 from Goldman Sachs and $67,500 from Lehman Brothers, which went bankrupt in the mortgage crisis last year.

He also had significant income from Harvard University and from investments, the forms showed.

As chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, Summers is a leading voice in Obama's policies to reverse the recession in the United States, rebuild the financial industry and help to end the global crisis.

The disclosure documents showed many of the senior advisers to the president earned large salaries from their companies, served in lucrative positions on corporate boards and had large holdings of stocks, bonds and mutual funds.

National Security Adviser James Jones reported collecting more than $1 million for serving as a director for Boeing, Chevron and other companies. He had a salary and bonuses of $900,000 from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod reported $896,776 in salary from his consulting firm AKP&D Message and Media as well as $500,000 in partnership income. He had another $151,914 in partnership income from his other campaign management firm, ASK Public Strategies.

Axelrod reported he had entered an agreement to sell the firms for $3 million over five years.

Valerie Jarrett, another senior Obama adviser, reported $346,687 in directors' fees, including from the consulting firm Navigant, a real estate investment trust and the Chicago Stock Exchange.

Jarrett had $302,000 in salary from a company that develops and manages apartment buildings, plus $550,000 in deferred salary from the same firm, her disclosure form showed.

United States of America courts work for Israel and Israelis

A federal judge on Friday ordered Iran to pay $25 million plus interest to the family of Israeli soldier Nachshon Wachsman, who was kidnapped and executed by Hamas in 1994.

Wachsman was a 19-year-old U.S. citizen and Israeli army corporal when he was taken by four members of Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the United States. His abduction damaged Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations at the time, as he pleaded on videotape for his life.

Wachsman's mother and six brothers filed the lawsuit in 2006 against Iran and its ministry of information and security, saying Tehran was responsible for the death because it provided training and support to Hamas. Iran has refused to respond to the lawsuit, resulting in a default judgment in favor of Wachsman's family.

U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina awarded $5 million to Wachsman's mother and $2.5 million to each brother for their emotional distress, and $5 million to Wachsman's estate for his potential lost earnings and the pain and suffering he endured for six days while he was held hostage before being executed. The court also ruled that Iran should pay 6 percent annual interest from the date of Wachsman's murder nearly 15 years ago.

It's unclear if the family will get any of the money, said Michael Jacobson, a former senior adviser in the Treasury Department's office of terrorism and financial intelligence.

"It's been historically pretty difficult to collect against those types of cases," said Jacobson, now a senior fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. But he noted that the courts could seize any assets of Iranian entities in the United States to help pay a judgment.

Wachsman was abducted by four members of Hamas on October 9, 1994, as he waited on the side of a public street near the central Israeli city of Lod for a ride to visit a friend. The kidnappers wore black hats and yarmulkes as disguises that allowed them to lure Wachsman into their rented van, which had Israeli license plates.

The abductors blindfolded and bound Wachsman, then took him to a safe house in Bir Nabala, an Arab village just north of Jerusalem, where they videotaped him with his identification card and Israeli army-issued M-16 rifle. They demanded the release of the jailed Hamas leader and 200 other Muslim fundamentalist prisoners by Oct. 14, 1994, in exchange for Wachsman's life.

On video, Wachsman urged Israel to meet the kidnappers' demands. "If not, they will kill me," he said. "I ask you to do all you can so I get out of here alive."

The kidnapping increased tensions between Israel and Palestine, with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin cutting off peace negotiations and telling Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat that he was holding him personally responsible for the soldier's safe return.

Israeli security forces captured one of the abductors, who told them where Wachsman was being held. An Israeli commando unit raided the safe house shortly before the deadline on Oct. 14, and as they attempted to blow down heavily fortified doors with explosives, the kidnappers shot Wachsman. An Israeli soldier and all three remaining kidnappers were killed in an ensuing fire fight.

The court found that several of the Hamas members instrumental in Wachsman's abduction and execution either received terrorist training by Iran's Revolutionary Guard or were related to those who received the training.

"The financial support, tactical training and political direction that Iran provided to Hamas proximately caused the abduction and execution of Nachshon," Urbina concluded.

Wachsman was born in Jerusalem, but was a citizen of the United States. His mother is a U.S. citizen who moved from New York City to Israel in the late 1960s, and his brothers are all dual citizens of the United States and Israel.

The court says it can issue a ruling against Iran from Washington for several reasons, including that this case involves a hostage taking of a U.S. citizen; that the plaintiffs are U.S. citizens; and that similar conduct by U.S. agents within the United States could be subject to a similar lawsuit.

The Wachsman family details in court filings how they have struggled with his violent and public death, with his mother diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder and on medication and one brother having attempted suicide three times in his grief.

The family also presented evidence that Wachsman, six months out of high school at the time of his death, planned to become a doctor one day. That led to a $3 million judgment for his lost earnings alone.

A former Nazi concentration camp guard who was living in Wisconsin has been deported to Austria, Justice Department officials said Thursday.

Prosecutors said 83-year-old Josias Kumpf (yoh-SEE'-uhs KOOMF) served as a guard at the Sachsenhausen (ZAHK'-zen-how-zen) concentration camp in Germany and the Trawniki (trafh-NEE'-kee) labor camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, and at slave labor sites in occupied France.

U.S. investigators found he participated in a 1943 mass shooting in Poland in which 8,000 Jewish men, women and children were murdered in pits at Trawniki in a single day.

"Josias Kumpf, by his own admission, stood guard with orders to shoot any surviving prisoners who attempted to escape an SS massacre that left thousands of Jews dead," Acting Assistant Attorney General Rita Glavin said in a statement.

Peter Rogers, Kumpf's attorney, didn't immediately return a message Thursday.

Investigators say Kumpf joined the SS Death's Head guard forces in 1942.

Kumpf was born in what is now Serbia, immigrated to the U.S. from Austria in 1956, settled in Racine, Wis., and became a U.S. citizen in 1964.

A federal judge in Milwaukee had previously found Kumpf didn't disclose he had been an SS guard because he feared it would disqualify him when he applied for a visa to the U.S.

In a 2003 interview, Kumpf said he was taken from his home in Yugoslavia as a 17-year-old and forced to serve as a guard, but he didn't participate in any atrocities.

At a 2006 hearing Rogers described Kumpf as "a gentleman who was involuntarily inscripted into the army, assigned to the SS and then stationed at places where admittedly terrible things happened. My client never took part in them."

But at a subsequent deportation hearing, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich said Kumpf participated in an operation that resulted in the murder of thousands of innocent victims.

"His culpability in this atrocity does not diminish with the passage of time," Friedrich said at the time.

Obama asked if he will still keep working with Republicans. Obama replies

"Of course I will continue to talk to the Israeli in charge of the Republican Party."

With members of both parties gathered at the White House for Monday's summit on fiscal responsibility, President Obama was asked whether he'll continue his outreach to Republicans.

He didn't have to scan the crowd to settle on a member of Congress he could single out to make his point.

"I'm going to keep on talking to Eric Cantor," the president said.

The second-ranking House Republican -- and the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives -- Cantor appears to be a well-positioned foil for the new president.
